Unreliable and unhelpful hosting service

"I had email problems with my account intermittently since I moved hosting there.

Submitted a ticket and no reply.

Also purchased a second hosting package and my card was charged. I still cannot access that hosting and they cancel my tickets when I ask for support. Would not have purchased the 2nd hosting had I been more sure that the email problems were from their side and not mine.

I run a business and this hosting company is just plain unreliable and unhelpful."

Refund being denied...
More Startlogic billing and refund issues - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8

"I have no website. I signed on with sls 4/19/06 with a new domain name to register, they accepted it, promptly debited me $71.40, and when I found no trace of any word otherwise from them by 4/23, went to their site and got somebody on live chat. The young man said that my account had been "etup"--I told him I did not know what that meant (it was late on the east coast and I didn't recognize the word "setup" without the S). After a bit of failure to communicate, he told me he would "resend" the information. I told him that there was no RE- involved; they had failed to carry out the simplest next step--it was too late, I wanted my refund.I have emailed 2 other people, one in billing, and one in support, and it is as if they are oblivious to my request for a refund. They keep telling me how to access my setup, and I do not want to do that--I think they are running me around until the 30 days expires. I guess this is butting my head against a brick wall, but $71.40 is not a small sum to me, and the principle is growing larger as I see that they have been so messy with others also."

"I just dumped startlogic. They were the WORST ISP I have ever used. Their tech support people are idiots and there servers are held together with bubblegum.. The damn server crashed on a weekly basis.

In 1 month, my site was down for 5 times, so this is amazing service, very bad service. I hope all the people will or going to buy the hosting from startlogic will know about it.

Thanks for this site."

Filed complaint with Better Business Bureau...

"Okay... well this is follow-up to a previous posting about my experience with these a*******. I filed an online report with the Better Business Bureau several weeks back, but I have not been contacted by either the BBB or StartLogic - as a matter of fact, my case can be viewed by myself, but not by anyone else - the BBB doesn't plan for it to go public I guess!

I don't know what the deal is here, but I thought the BBB was there to somewhat protect consumers from companies as StartLogic... though it seems they are more or less a buffer - to let the complaintant vent and post a huge complaint and then hope that the complaintant forgets about his/her issues with said company.

I haven't forgotten - In fact, I called them 4 days ago to request a refund and the lady I spoke with laughed and hung up on me - she didn't say ANYTHING -she laughed and HUNG UP ON ME! What the hell is with this company???? If I don't hear anything by next week, I will seek legal counsel and will go from there!

STARTLOGIC is a company without moral values - and yes... they SUCK!"

"..today has been pure hell dealing with Startlogic. These guys have absolutely lost my business. As a web designer, my main source of income is from selling websites and showing the work I've created in the past to potential clients. Yesterday night- I go to connect to my site and am redirected to a page informing me that my "ACCOUNT IS SUSPENDED"! I immediately check my inbox and nothing has been recieved- infact its been disabled as well, so i fired off several angry emails from another account demanding that my account be reactivated immediately and for an explanation of just what the hell is going on(I am a paying customer, after all and you could at the very least inform me of any problems before you throw the switch on my main web identity!!!!!) ! The first problem was the fact that they unnecessarily disabled SMTP access to my account- so even if they did send me a message explaining how to fix the account or what the problem was, there was no possible way to recieve this. As I tried to pinpoint what exactly had happened with my account, I got various responses from technical support ranging from 'a phishing script' to 'you've been hacked' but i really doubt this and believe they may have just accidentally erased my files and have use all of this crap as an excuse. Extremely untrustworthy, and very very very (did i mention VERY) poor technical support. This company in my opinion is a borderline scam and I am still deeply upset at having given them any money. DO NOT SIGN UP WITH THEM! YOU WILL REGRET IT! STARTLOGIC BURN IN HELL FOR WASTING MY PRECIOUS DAY!!"

"Obviously StartLogic has a terrible reputation... I only WISH now that I had studied on them before signing up for a year!

From the start: Quick to bill my credit card online when I started service, but slow as hell to reply back letting me know my account was actually set up (2 days)! The instructions were in an email which is expected, but they were sub-par to say the least.

I've had nothing but trouble trying to get a response from the Tech people about an issue I have had with FTP uploading files to the public_html folder in my root directory. Some folders will throw a response back saying blocked, but I've looked at the permissions and all is good! This just started happening one week ago, but I've called and they asked me to address the situation in an email. I sent an email and STILL no response, except that a ticket has been filed and a link to check the status of it. Nobody has taken a look at it. I called them about this and they stated that StartLogic technicians are aware of a problem with ports and are actively working on a resolution... One week and STILL NO RESOLUTION?

StartLogic is FULL of representatives with nasty dispositions and seemingly are governed by any policies and procedures for speaking with customers!

PLEASE DON'T USE STARTLOGIC - As a group of concerned consumers, let's stick together and get rid of these jokers!"

"I have just begun moving my website to StartLogic, having had a very bad time with my current hosting company. I found your site, and thought that sounded a lot like my current company. In fact, it sounded exactly like my problems.

I did a quick check with the Arizona Secretary of State's corporation search and it turns out my company and StartLogic have the same address, and the same CEO. Thomas Gorney is CEO of BOTH StartLogic and iPowerweb! Both are located at 919 E Jefferson St., Phoenix, AZ 85034.

My experience with iPowerweb has been exactly as described by many of the posts on your site. Since we now know the companies are different in name only, I think you might want to leave ipowerweb's name in this post.

I told StartLogic why I was changing from ipowerweb to them. StartLogic sales was so helpful, and so very happy to promise to do better than their "competitor" who had done so poorly!

She's probably still laughing!

I will be cancelling my move as soon as possible."

Site down - No Support - Goodbye Startlogic!

"If you are considering a new company for hosting, DO NOT USE startlogic. I have been with them for 6 months and they have the most unreliable servers I've ever dealt with. I can't tell you how many times my website has been down. I've always been told that the "Admin" is working on the problem from technical support and that the information can't be released as to why they are down. I always get the same BS from them and they can never give you a straight up answer. Besides, half the time I talk to the bozos there they are so imcompitent at there job that I can't figure out how they got jobs in the first place. It's absolutely unbelieveable that this company is still alive and kicking in the hosting market. Matter of fact, as I write this letter, my website is down right now. It has been down for 4 hours so I decided to come on here and vent a little frustration with this company. Before tonight it was up and down the past 5 days! What was really great and made me laugh a little, is when I got frustrated tonight with the fact my site being down, tech support got even more frustrated with me!! I didnt use one swear word and eventually after asking a few questions the dumb ass on the other end hung up on me! How Nice! The people that work there are so unprofessional and it just irritates the living hell out of me. I'm already in search of a new host and will NOT in any way in HELL renew my contract with a company who runs fisher price servers with spongebob squarepants running tech support. GOOD BYE SUCKLOGIC! I hope you end up high and dry for all the crap I had to deal with!"

Site down repeatedly with no explanation given

"I chose startlogic to host the site for my personal chef service on the advice of a web technician. I signed on in May. Very early on, I had trouble updating the site. When I made a change to a single page, the remaining pages disappeared, and I had to have them reloaded. This problem eventually worked itself out (I have no idea how), but then I would make changes that would not be reflected on the site. When I called startlogic technical support, the technician practically sneered at my stupidity for suggesting that perhaps there was a lapse (an unreasonably long one) between making changes & having them appear on the site. This turned out to be the case.

A few days before Thanksgiving, my site went down. This being my busiest time of the year, I immediately contacted startlogic's technical support. The technician told me the site would be back up "in twenty minutes." By the next day, the site was still down. I called again, and a different technician (having no knowledge of my prior call), said the site would be back up in an hour. The next day, the site was still down, and technician number three said it would take 8-12 hours. Day four, technician number four said it would be 24 hours. The site was down a week -- this time.

In early December, it went back down. After the same abysmal service scenario, I filed complaints with the better business bureau and the consumer protection department of the attorney general's office. Very shortly after I notified startlogic of this fact, the site went back up. I am in the process of transferring to another web hosting company.

I urge anyone who has experienced problems of this magnitude to file formal complaints with the appropriate consumer protection agencies. I am livid by this experience."

Files lost forever

Name: Myria

"Up until last Thursday I had never had much in the way of problems with Startlogic in the almost two years I've had an account with them. Then again, in that time I've never seriously needed tech support. Up until last Thursday I had a Wiki that contained eight months and over 1,500 pages of my work. Last Thursday I went to check my Wiki and got an error message indicating that several .myi files were missing. Since neither I nor my aps have direct access to those files, clearly something had happened on Startlogic's end.

So I contacted Startlogic tech support and quickly discovered some unfortunate facts --

    1) Startlogic tech support thinks that an average of 24+ hours response time is acceptable.

    2) Ironically, the Startlogic tech support e-mail address (support@startlogic.com) is routinely mis-routed on the weekends so that any letters to tech support bounce.

    3) Any response from Startlogic tech support constitutes a 'fix' in their eyes, regardless of whether or not anything is fixed. Your trouble ticket and any related e-mails will be immediately deleted so that you have to start all over again.

    4) Startlogic doesn't make or keep backups, even when they do something to the servers that could destroy your data.

    5) Any back-ups customers make through the vDeck interface are worthless because:

      a) Startlogic's SQL servers were configured by morons
      b) vDeck back-ups are not in sql format, and
      c) vDeck's restore functions are broken.
    6) If you write to Startlogic tech support long and often enough you will:
      a) get a note obviously written by someone either drunk or stoned, and
      b) discover that they do not actually read customer e-mails as they will ask you things you already discussed in your previous e-mail.
After a week of back-and-forth e-mails with the pathetic joke that is Startlogic Tech support, it has become clear that my files are gone and my backups are worthless. As soon as I can possibly manage I will be moving the rest of my sites off of Startlogic and I will be canceling my account with them."

"My nightmare with them is over and I should be working right now, but if my time helps others not sign up for startlogic then its worth it.

I signed up for a the "Virtual Server" account. I'm not a unix expert, but I know my way around, so I just set it up how they stated on their very limited support faq's.. Got my email aliases setup, but my domain name wasn't showing up. I had transfered it from another host. So I finally got through to tech support via phone after about 10 tickets went up answered. Here is how my conversation with tech support went:

Tech Support: "Hello tech support what do you want!"
Me: "Oh yeah, my domain name isn't showing up. My domain name is pointed at your server, but my email and website aren't working with my domain name."
Tech Support: "SO!"
Me: "Well, I can't use my email and people won't be able to see my website."
Tech Support: "When did you transfer it"
Me: "Two days ago"
Tech Support: "Well sometimes it takes a long time to have all the servers refresh throughout the internet. Up to 4 days sometimes, even a week."
Me: "Are you serious? Are you sure there isn't any settings you can look at to make sure my domain name is working correctly at your host"
Tech Support: "no, not until after a week or so."

The tech support guy was a raging a****** and I wen't out of my way to be polite. I was getting email but I was only able to check it via ssh login, and the tech support guy wouldn't even talk to me about it until after a week. I couldn't believe it. So ticket after ticket non one had any help, only pointed me to their crappy FAQ's. I was like "screw this" I eventually read all over the internet and finally found a host that had some legitimate possitve reviews. I immediatly canceled my account and transfered my domain name to my new host. I had a working email and site in less than a day. My new host rules, friendly tech support via phone in minutes. Emails responded to in minutes. Awesome features. Easy setup even of MYSQL databases. Awesome all around, check em out [edit - promotion of other hosting companies is prohibited]

As for the refund that took almost two months to get. The problem was if I wrote more than one ticket like "please refund my money" I would get an automatic email back saying that I was spamming them and all emails I sent would be deleated. So I waited a day and sent a new ticket.

Eventually I got an email and a phone call, they said if I didn't call them on the phone and explain why I canceled my account they couldn't refund my money. So I eventually got through to someone in accounts or something and told them my complaints. They argued a bit and eventually agreed to a refund. The credit showed up on my credit card about 6 weeks later.

IT'S FINALLY ALL OVER NOW! PHEW!"

"i would like to start recording all the difficulties i'm having with startlogic. we still have an account with them, but the tech support i am receiving is ridiculous. We have a person placing bogus accounts in our database... some sicko from China, four to five times a day for the past month. I just want to know how to record the IP addresses in the logs so we can blacklist each IP address this person uses so they cannot access our website. It has been FOUR WEEKS and the problem still exists, and techsupport@startlogic takes days to respond. Each time they have, they've provided me with little or no help at all. They had problems with their service during this time which also hindered finding a quick solution. I'm still trying to get help with no avail."

"Startlogic is running on a shoe string. So unfortunately the real losing party is the basic consumer of the lower level hosting packages. The Virtual Server accounts they offer are pretty good because of FreeBSD. But as far as customer service....forget about it, they truely suck. When you speak to these guys (iff they aswer the phone) be sure to keep smiling. They will definately try to take there work related frustration out on you.I feel sad for anyone working for Startlogic. Although they still currently suck, I imagine they will get better as web users and developers get more knowledge in regards to web servers. The Virtual server package is the best thing a webmaster can get.

I paid for a virtual server account that was supposed to come with 5gb of space. They only gave me 2gb. Because of this I can't put more sites up. The sites are already paid for by my customers. I became aware of this problem 7 days agao and immediately called startlogic. They said they would resolve the issue by repartitioning the drive and copying my files over to the new space. That was 7 days ago. I just got off the phone with the manager of whatever (J***), and he said it will be resolved by tonight. I've heard this before. Well, I still have faith that this will be resolved.......we'll find out tonight."

Now I am into double-digit messages sent to them to try to get a refund, and all that I ever get is an occasional reply asking for information... usernamename, password, credit card number...this is nuts. Buyers beware! I am reporting them to their local PD, the BBB and anyone else I can come up with...has ANYONE ever gotten their money back from these guys??"

"THEY DO SUCK! WHEN I FIRST GOT STARTLOGIC, I NEVER HAD PROBLEMS. WEBSITE HAD MORE THEN 2GB OF GOODIES ON IT, PICS, FILMS ETC. THEN IT STARTED...first the FrontPage extensions started to take a s***, then they re-installed them, deleted them , and re-installed them again about 10 g** d*** times! STILL DOESN'T WORK. I got a FREE upgrade for all this headache to 5GB of space and 100GB of bandwidth. WOW! I was pleased for this, but it soon died again! Their Customer Service Blows! You call and wait around forever, and when some d****** does answer he has no g** d*** clue about WTF is going on. He tells me to call billing to fix my EXTENSION problems! WTF?? BILLING? I thought that NERDS from Tech Support did that?!!! NOPE, not with CrapLogic. I have not been able to see my site for about a week now, the d*** server is BEING rebuilt "for the third time!". Frontpage extension still not recognized and worst of all, I ain't got time to be f****** around with that crap cause I got a real job and my wife to care for. Not sit around the d*** computer all d*** day and pray and hope that website does not crash.

"I had startlogic hosting for a full year. It was coming up on renewal time, and I was contacted and informed that their billing information had expired, and they could not renew my account without having me give them new information. I decided not to renew and have a personal website. I just didn't have time for it anymore, so I told them not to renew it anyway.

They said okay.

A week later a charge for $90 appeared on my bank account. Renewal of hosting. So, I called back to ask how they renewed with outdated credit card info, and also, after I told them not to. They didn't know what had happened on their end, but told me the money should be refunded in about a week, and sorry for the misunderstanding.

No problem, I didn't care. Simple slip up.

A week later, no refund.. so, I call back, and they tell me that there is a "note" attatched to my account saying that I no longer desired hosting but nothing about cancelling my account. I asked them, what that means exactly, cause it sure didn't make sense to me. They couldn't tell me, and told me to call back the next day. Sick of wasting phone minutes on calls, I decided to try the email trouble ticketing system. I was then informed that it would take 10 to 15 days to refund the money once the account has been disabled.

15 days had passed since the first time I asked them to cancel. So, I replied to my job ticket, which was closed, even though the issue was not resolved. I have no idea what day they are starting this 10-15 day count from. I guess from the 3rd time I contacted them, which would have been the first email ticket I submitted.

The only thing I get back in any form of a response is... "It takes 10-15 business days to process a request." I don't actually get a response. It's been 22 business days since my first request, 15 since the second request, and 13 from the 3rd request. So, I guess I might just kiss my money good bye.

The customer does not matter to startlogic, and they are incapable of communicating with people in any way."

they shut down our message board

Name: withheld by request

Website: www.skydiveelsinore.com

"I wanted to write you and let you know what happened to the Message Board. As I am sure you have noticed, the message board is now down. I spent a lot of time setting up, testing, implementing and executing our new message board. After the launch, our new message board gained instant success as a place for our Skydive Elsinore Community to share their thoughts, experiences and just generally get to know each other.

The new message board was active for about three weeks and was gaining momentum with about 100 members signed up, and about 200 posts.

With out any warning what-so-ever, the hosting company we use, StartLogic.com, shut down our message board and locked our files. I have been on the phone with them many times in the last few days and I have received the worst, most rude and unprofessional service you can imagine. In addition to shutting down our board, they have locked the files so I am unable to transfer the board to another server, and I believe at this point, all the work I did to set it up, and all the entries posted are now lost.

StartLogic claims that the IkonBoard creates vulnerability to server side attacks. IkonBoard is the most popular and stable message board script on the internet with over one million scripts in use. I have IkonBoards installed on numerous servers and it has never been an issue.

After reading lots of personal accounts and after my own personal experience with StartLogic, it's clear that the company just doesn't care about it's customers and their concerns.

So, as long as we are on their servers we will not have a message board, and if we do set it up on a new server, we will be starting from scratch."

editors note: The above is a transcript of an email sent by the webmaster of this site to site members by way of explaning why their message board had been shut down.

My account suspended with no warning...

"Started out ok, seemed fast, responsive, I liked it. Found out, I had to pay to have a subdomain added, a bit of a letdown, but, I can deal with that. The real problems started with the SQL server. We run a growing Vbulletin based website. We started getting SQL access issues occuring roughly several times a week, then, it got to be daily. They finally appeared to have fixed it... for awhile. Then, surely enough, SQL errors, sluggishness, and outright SQL server inaccessability was bringing our site to a halt. Now, the final straw, Our account was suspended for what they claim is excessive usage. We got NO warning of any kind, and their support couldn't help us at ALL. All attempts at contacting them were met with the same response "Please email abuse@startlogic.com". If your just hosting HTML pages with no need for SQL access, or do not have a lot of traffic, Startlogic may be for you, though I could reccomend better, if your a growing site that needs SQL, RUN from startlogic. They will dissapoint you in the end."
